I recently cleaned the screen for the transmission fluid on a 2940 I've purchased. I found quite a bit of paper-type debris, although no metal. I then dropped the fluid and found more flakes of this gasket-type material sitting in the pan. The fluid looks good-unburned, so I put it back. Although the PTO turns, I haven't put a load on it yet. Gears, brakes, 3 pt., and hydraulics all work well. Clutch works well for driving. Could this possibly be a shot PTO clutch? Any suggestions would help. I would have tried to load the PTO, but don't have an implement readily available. Any suggestions from the "experts" would be greatly appreciated.

Wayne, If the paper is a fiber red color, there is three possible places that this material may be coming from. 1st, is the PTO clutch disk, 2nd transmission two speed clutch disk and 3rd the rear wheel brake disk. It is a toss of the coin to know where to look first. If you go the center of tractor you just as well as look at both the PTO and two speed while the tractor is split. The most common cause for this failure is moisture in the oil for long periods of time. Good advice on the shift lever boots posted earlier. Good Luck, Dave W.

Wayne, sounds like the fluid has gelled/foamed and formed "parafin". I would definately change the fluid and filter before working this tractor. Also, I had a 2840 that would get sluggish steering from time to time. I found that there is a bypass screen in the bottom of the hyd pump that would get full of this type of material you describe. Keep that thing clean. Also make sure the boots on the gear sticks are in good shape. that is a place where water and dust can get into the trans contaminating the system. Changing those out and keeping good ones on are the best money you will spend.
