We are looking at a 7000 John Deere planter, and since we are basically new to Deere, is there anything we should know before buying it? Its a fairly rust free, 4-38 planter. Looks like it was well taken care of. So, if there is anything i should know about this model, or any tips for using this model you think i should know, post a follow-up! Thanks in advance

J., the 7000 planter is a very good machine but like anything else with moving parts they will wear. The things to check are the diameter of the double disk openers (be sure there is bevel left on them- approximately 14 1/4" diameter or larger). Check on the closing wheels and the depth arms and wheels next to the openers (they should have very little side play). The parallel arm bushings will also wear over time. The finger pickup units need to be checked as well. Most everything can be replaced but it is nothing to spend a couple hundred dollars per row unit to get a worn one up in shape. I have a 7000 planter and it has served me well for many years. Hope this helps. Mike
