I just purchased a John Deere Model A. It was running great when I bought it, but now it's not. The timing is perfect - new points. The carberator was recently rebuilt by the John Deere dealer. It starts easily, but runs weakly and dies if you apply any load. When it starts to die, you can get it back if you pull out the choke for a second. Any ideas??

The last John Deere A was made in 1952. Yours cannot be a 1954.

Lynn, check the load screw on the carb [the one closest to center of the tractor]. If unsure, turn it in until "lightly" seated & back it out one turn, then adjust from there with a load on the tractor.
~If the load screw adjustment doesn't help, you either have a fuel flow problem [is the fuel shut off set to be fully open?]. If unsure about the fuel flow, open the drain valve on the bottom of the carb & see if a pencil sized stream of fuel flows out for AT LEAST 30 seconds, [if not find out why].
~If all ok per above, suspect a carb internal passage is blocked with rust or gum.....

If it worked fine before it was overhauled, I'd check the following:

The gaskets at the back end of the carb. An air leak can require the additional gas mixture your choke response gives.

The idle adjustment needle.

The fuel supply. Make sure there is no obstruction and the filter is clean.

Lastly, remember, just because a dealer rebuilt it, doesn't mean it's done correctly. If all else fails, rebuild it yourself, paying particular attention to the very small long passages in the body, and the fuel nozzle. Also, check for air leaks at the throttle lever: you may need new bushings.
