Has anyone had luck using a Wal Mart 3 year free replacement car battery in a 69', 12V 4020? I live in the south and should not need to start in the winter, so I thought I might save some money on batteries. The tractor is easy starting.

You get what you pay for, JD batteries are top quality I have had JD batteries last as long as 11 years. try that with the cheap ones.

My question is how they're going to fit into the long, narrow battery boxes on your 4020. I'm assuming that you're talking about a regular car battery, and that size and shape is not going to fit in the boxes, if your tractor still has them. You could make your own mounting set-up, but by the time you're done with the trouble of doing that, you could have bought the proper batteries. Not to mention the fact that car batteries really aren't designed to put up with the kind of vibration and punishment they will receive mounted on a farm tractor. There are other options for batteries that will fit properly, besides Deere. Check your local farm supply, Interstate batteries outlet, etc. Ultimately, it's your dollar, but it's been my experience that the batteries are one of the last places you want to cut corners. My two cents.

You don't say whether your tractor is gas or diesel. Diesels require a much heavier-duty starting system, including battery. The main thing is to make sure your battery has capacity to furnish sufficient amps to the starter without too much voltage drop. Get a battery with cranking amps at or near the original. When the starter starts to drag because of battery being low, fix it or you'll burn up your starter.

To start my 4020D, I supplemented the two "stock" batteries with a big-truck/tractor battery which sits on the platform and is tied in parallel to the other pair. And yes, I buy all my batteries at Walmart or a discount auto parts store if I can find them there.

A Wal-Mart battery set My old pickup truck on fire..... Battery shorted out internally... Wal-Mart gave Me a bunch of grief and drug their feet... Finally told Me if I wanted to talk to them further....I could do it in Court. You can bet I wouldn't put a Wal-Mart battery in anything I care about!
