Jeff the friend you borrowed it from should be able to answer better than anyone here, he has used it and knows its tricks.

Generally these balers have the opposite problem with the auger, just slip across the hay. Teh washer trick below might help, have also seen them with small cuts, maybe 1/8 deep on auger done with hacksaw. Tension should be by tightening screws on the back that you tighten to get more tension and heavier bales. Twine can break for lots of reasons, one thing to check is that there are no rough spots on the areas it is pulled over, ends of needles, guides etc. Make sure it is threaded right also. If tension is too tight it may not pull through quick enough when it ties. Other thing I found on a baler once was a bolt that was too long on the bottom of the bale case, twine would catch on it and break. If you get too much hay on the right side of the bale that will cause it also, from feeding off center or uneven windrows or adjustemnt to feeder forks. some possibilities anyway

I would suggest that your hay is what we locally call "in case"; i.e. too much moisture. It may be totally cured, but if the air is too heavy, the hay can pick up enough moisture that it will not feed properly. Never had that problem with square baler, but have wrapped various shafts/rollers many times with large round bales.

Maybe the grass hay is too green and grass-like.

Your hay may be to green, on our old IH, and JD bailor's we put some 5/8" lock washers, on the auger, it sure did help feed the hay in better, just put the split of the washer, onthe edge of the auger, and take a hammer and tap it down all the way, 6 or 12 what ever you have, any size around the 5/8 size.
