Frank;

My turn for a dumb question. I keep seing posts about flat heads, what is a flat head for a G?

I suspect it is simular to a regular head but with smaller cavities for the combustion chamber to rase compression.

Can you tell a flat head form a regular head form the outside of the engine?

Were the flat heads an option form JD? or were the an add on?

Thanks in advance for your answeres

The "flat" heads were used on the unstyled tractors. I believe the unstyled tractors had a block that was 1 inch longer than the styled tractors, and they needed a smaller combustion chamber volume to keep the compression ratio the same. A simply trick to raise compression on a styled tractors is to remove the stock head and install a flat head.
