Mulching (mess) with JD Sabre?

Hi,

I use a 5 yr. old 13HP Sabre with a 38" cut to mow my lawn, and find cleaning maintenance to be difficult. I thought it would be practical to use the mulching feature as I did not want to empty bags of grass and pay for the bag attachment - plus the mulch is good for the lawn.

Since it was new, the thing clogs up with grass under the deck especially the swiss-cheese-holed "mulch plate" - the holes clog instantly (why put holes in there if they clog so fast?) and I have to sweep it off every time I use it because grass goes everywhere. It takes more time to clean than it does to mow the lawn! Do others have the same problem? The motor is B&S, the blades are sharp, and maintenance is up to date.

I can't reach anyone who can help at Deere, but would appreciate any pointers to someone there (or anywhere) than can let me know what's up. Also, does anyone know how to easily remove the deck? I think the way I'm doing it must be wrong...

Covered in grass in Mass,

Aldo

Thank you Drs. Good and Evil.

I don't let the grass get that high or cut when wet. Perhaps that's just the way it was designed. So, I have visited www.gatorblade.com and they appear be well made and have enough design smarts to give them a shot.

Appreciate the help.

Forgot to mention that there are no gator blades for her 42" or I would have bought them. Guessing there is not enough clearance under this mulching deck.

Bought my wife a 42" Sabre with the mulching deck. She is very fussy but is pleased with this machine. Has a little more difficulty if grass is damp or "too high". Try a set of "Gator blades" on yours. Big improvement on a non-mulching deck--so some say.

I'd suggest mowing Your lawn more often... sounds like Your trying to mulch way too much grass and thats why it plugs.... Bet The Dealer didn't Tell You that when You bought the tractor either Did HE? You shouldn't mow over 1/3 of the length of the blades of grass off anyhow.
