We have discussed this before, but it was back at a time when I was so overwhelmed with information that I couldn't process it all. What is the purpose of the ventilator pipe that runs from the intake pipe to the governor on my '41 B?

Clooney and Walt,
Thanks to both of you for the info, sounds simple enough now that it has been explained so well.

Gary, Walt did a pretty good job of explaining the crankcase vent system on the EARLY tractors.
~That system didn't work all that good as the crankcase wasn't vented that well at low throttle settings due to little air flow through the carb & not much pressure difference between the crankcase & the air intake pipe.
~It's primary purpose was to remove moisture from the crankcase, & if the tractor was idled for long periods in cold weather it didn't do the job.
~On the later Deere 2-cylinders an air pump was added to the rear of the fan shaft area that reversed the air flow & blew fresh air from the intake tract into the crankcase to keep purged it of moisture, that system even worked at low carb openings & idle & didnt suck dirt in through the pulley area.

Positive Crankcase Ventilation, the inside of the intake has a negative atmosphere. air is pulled from the crankcase thru the governor housing to the intake pipe thru the carb and into the combustion chamber and is burned and out the exhaust. not all the gases in the combustion chamber go out the exhaust, some of them leak past the compression rings and into the crankcase where they are pulled into the pipe you mentioned and into the intake pipe. not all the gases are from the combustion chamber. some are steam from the condensation from when the engine sat idle and cooled down (moisture in the air turned to water) and some of the gases are from the oil in the crankcase as it gets hot, it turns some of the lighter properties in it to vapor (cracking) some of the lighter properties are the gas that didn't burn because the engine was not warm enough to keep the gas in a vapor form as it intered the combustion chamber and was not burned but, instead found it's way past the compression rings to the oil in the crankcase, or worse as an airborne sludge that settles on all surfaces inside the crankcase and inside the valve train cover (it has the texture of a chocolate fudge cake icing) when nondetergent oil is used. detergent oil was developed to combine with (one of it's properties)the impurities in the crankcase so that the oil filter could catch the particles larger than the oil molecules and all the oil and impurities could be drained when the oil and filter were changed. this applies to all internal cumbustion engines.
