I have had several 70 thru the years, and have just started using one I traded for a few months ago off of the late Shorty Dear. I had only driven around the place, and there was no gear noise at all, very quiet,(Shorty had told me that the rear end had no noise at all, and it didn't have any when we got it) but the clutch was worn out, so I replaced all four disks. Now there is a deep, dry groan, vibration noise that was orginally only evident in 4-6,half throttle and above. The rear end grease was milky so I changed it out to new 85-140 Mystic, but the noise is still there. bailed hay with it yesterday(no live pto), and the fellow running it says that he thinks the noise is now in all gears. I wonder if it could be a clutch carrierbearing, but it can only be heard when in gear and under way at half throttle or more.

I have a 630 with what I call straight gear howl, sounds almost like a train whistle, but this 70 sounds a lot different to any noise i have every heard on a JD. Help!!!!!

Rev JJ, diagnosing a "deep, dry groan, vibration noise" over the internet is going to be difficult without your working with us, & even then it will just be a guessing game.
~Exactly when did the noise begin?
~Did it start when you rebuilt the clutch, if so you probably have the pulley gear running in a different place on the 1st reduction gear due to drive disk installation & a thicker inner clutch plate.
~Is the clutch pulley lose [can you lift it up & down when it is disengaged?]
~Does the noise go away or change with the PTO disengaged?
~The other things that come to mind are; that 85-140 gear oil, that stuff is formulated for the auto & truck industry as they are the number one users of that type of gear oil & it is made thin for mileage improvement & durability under load. Sticking to gears it doesn't do well on. It is also only 85 Weight that doesn't thin any more than 140 weight when it gets hot [it doesn't get that hot in a 2-cylinder trans]. ~If the noise has just been getting louder the more you use the tractor it might have bearings starting to get loose due to wear or pitting, [that milky oil you drained out was milky due to water & water will ruin a bearing in nothing flat.
~Give us all the information you can & we will start the guessing game..... .....

Noise started after I changed out the clutch disks. there is no noticeable play in the pulley either engaged nor disengaged. However, I ran her around today and tried to get the girl to groan again and it wouldn't do it in any gear. Just a little straight gear whine. PTO operation had no effect.

The brakes are flat wornout(an emergency would result in a fellow having to drag his fee to stop). One of my two cylinder partners in crime wonders if some how the bare shoes maybe rubbing and causing vibraton.

I guess personality is half the point of Poppin Johnnies.
