I have found a scarce JD with an unreadable steel serial number tag. Does anyone have any ideas on reading the number? I have heard that law enforcement has a procedure to bring out the number on engine blocks that have had the serial number ground off, does anyone know about this?

I hear that is a frequent issue regarding firearms. I guess they treat the metal with a special acid and the metal that has been stamped is more compressed than the metal around it thereby making the numbers ledgible once more. The tags might be easier to read from the back side than the front? You can usually narrow the possibilities by getting good details of the parts and casting numbers on the tractor and then see how close that makes it. If it were a rare tractor, maybe the archive people at deere could give you some possibile numbers?

Jim, I have heard a Jeweler may be able to read it also. Either way you would have to take the tag off. Make a call to them and if they can help let us know.
