About to put the LH governor cover back on the '44 A. Have a new ball bearing assembly for the end of the shaft, just under the cover. Question is: Am I suppose to pack those bearings with grease, or do they get lubricated in some other fashion? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

John, while in fact the L/H governor bearing gets oiled from oil splashed around by the fan gears it takes a long time after start up to get oil to that bearing.
~The L/H governor bearing is a sore spot on the H due to poor oiling at low RPM's so you will find a grease fitting on that bearing on a lot of old H's.
~It was such a problem that Deere offered an external oiling kit to plumb governor feed oil to the L/H governor bearing on the outside of the governor housing.
~In any case to answer your question, due as John T. said & grease it when installing. Caution: don't over grease it as that could plug the drain hole. All you need is a light coating of grease...

John, The Gov gets oil from the engine so dont pack those bearings but be sure you oil them and all the holes are clean and the drain is to the bottom .

John, Anytime I install a new bearing assembly like that (even when its normally lubed by engine oil), I always go ahead and grease pack them anyway to be safe until they receive their normal lubrication. Dont forget the shims/gaskets under the fan shaft tube mounting flange and the bearign end cap is how you adjust the fan shaft/bevel gear mesh and backlash. Ol John T in Indiana
