40C carb problem or battery or...?

recently acquired a 1953 40C (I love it!) 4 roller with blade, snowshoes and rockguards. And after a wonderful first few minutes of driving (with minimal gas in tank), it decided to quit. Start and then put in gear and 6 feat along and would quit again (can only just keep it running when still, out of gear and no loads). I killed the battery with all my failing starts and am getting a new one (ancient one no longer holds a charge) but not sure that is it... When i do get it running now (on old battery and lots of new gas) even lifting blade dampens engine significantly when tractor did not even notice it before.

1. must i have a good battery inline to keep spark running (is dead battery drawing too much current from generator to supply spark)? i.e. is this the only problem or...

2. is it possible (or highly likely?) that sediment from bottom of fuel tank plugged/clogged something in the carb (i know nothing of this jd40 system..yet)?

Appreciate any thoughts on what likely culprits could be.

I also notice that a little oil smoke comes out of oil breather cap. Is there any measure of concern I should i place on this?

Thanks

Scott, you could have either problem & the battery problem should be repaired before doing anything else.
~If the generator is charging, the tractor should run good with a low or even a missing battery. The problem is, once the RPM's drop down the charging quits or lowers enough that the ignition doesn't receive sufficient current to function.
~Start by at least getting a fully charged new [or good used] battery in the tractor [it will run for quite a while on a charged battery if not too many starts are attempted].
~Once the battery problem is taken care of you can move on to the charging system & fuel system.
~On the smoke issue; give it some time to loosen the rings up & then change the oil [the oil might be thin or gas diluted] then if it still smokes you can run a compression test & leakdown test to see if the rings are worn. Smoke out the breather isn't right but is probably normal on a well used 40 engine....
