Neighbor up the road said he will sell is 4520 to me for $6000. Is this a good buy? the tractor is in excellent shape. It only has about 2500 hours on it.

I bought a 4520 in June of this year for $2,500.00
Not a bad tractor. I put bit over $1,000 and few hundred hours on it to make it into a really nice old tractor. I don't know the price, but Hubcity make a speed changer to gear down the 1000 RPM PTO to make it 540 RPM PTO. These external boxes are rated up to 120 HP and only extened the PTO about a foot passed the original location.

The only knock on this tractor is the fact that it only has 1000rpm pto. If you dont intend to use it in the hayfield or for bush hogging (although you can get a 1,000 rpm cutter) then I think its an awesome deal however, these tractors (and the 4620s) usually sell for much less than the 4020s and 4320s which have 540 rpm pto making them much more versatile. From a collectors standpoint, Id say the tractor is a steal.

Everybody is right, if it doesn't need many repairs get it ASAP. You could turn around and sell it for way over 10K

Can't believe you're sitting here on the computer instead of at his place writing the check, lol. Seriously, if the tractor is that nice, that is a steal, just like Jim said. There are some very low-hour tractors out there, you've just got to be in the right place at the right time to find them. I've seen 86 series IHs with under 2000 hours advertised in the last few years, and one of our customers bought a 4840 about a years ago that had less than 1000 on it - when it was 15 or so years old. Be aware that if it's been sitting a long time, it will need a good service and possibly a lot of the belts, hoses etc replaced too, as they tend to dry-rot over that period of time. Give it some TLC as soon as you get it, as there will likely be lots of condensation in the crankcase, trans etc unless it's been kept up while it was parked.

If it's everything you say it is I would say it's a steal. On a farm auction this past winter, I saw a 4320 with no cab in good condition go for about $12,500. I have a hard time believing that there is a thirty year old tractor out there with only 2,500 hrs.

He bought it brand new,and about 5yrs later, he was in a car accident, and the tractor was parked because he lost is left leg in the accident

That would certainly explain the low hours Kid, sounds like a bargain to me.HJ
