J.R. Hobbs of Green magazine has written a book "Little Giants". It's a wealth of info about the Dubuque tractors.

Is the 420s a pretty common tractor? Is their history as a tractor very good? How many were made?

According to the Production Nbrs link on the left under Research & Info, there were 75000 made, 20000 of which were crawlers. There are 29 of them in the YT registry, 21 of them crawlers.

I had one with a 5 speed and live PTO (2 stage clutch)- I understand the 4 speeds did not have live PTO, but don't know that for a fact. I was very pleased with mine- worked like a 40 HP, I did baling, ran a Taarup mower (4 disc mower). 3 point draft sensing worked well. Mine had power steering, and I put a loader on it- had enough traction, even without a rear weight, to load and pick up a full bucket of wet manure/straw from a concrete floor, which many loaders won't do. Wish I still had it.
