I have a slant dash 1942 A, the best I can tell. I was told on this forum that the '43 and '44 models were the only ones with a steel ID tag. My tractor has a steel ID tag but the serial number starts with 51 and I am still trying to make out the rest of the numbers. It has the angle iron frame. Your thoughts.

Mike, I agree with you so go ahead and post your ? and I assure you someone will try to answer as best as they know how. The answers may not always be exact but we were not around when these monsters were built and we do the best we can. Glad you have one too and hope you stay enthused with the hobby.

There may be late 42's that have the steel tag. There is no documentation on when they went to steel. Cast frames started the second half of the 43 model year.

All battery equipped early styled A's have a slant dash. I don't know why people have to mention slant dash for the A's all the time. It was the B's that are hard to find. Your A is very common with the slant dash.

42 is serial number 510239-520003

I never said that my "A" was rare at all. I am simply enthused about my tractor. I thought I could get some real help, and support on my new project from some of the veterans out there. If you have to put negative comments like this in your responses, then this definitely says something about your character, and you probably should be ban from this forum!

Mike, take a chill pill. I don't think that Will P was offering negative advice at all. He didn't jump all over you. Maybe you had a bad day and lashed out a somebody when it really was not needed. I'm also just starting out with my first tractor, a '47 A, and have learned a tremendous amount of info. When I first started coming here I wondered what all the talk was of a "slant dash", it seemed everybody was thinking that they had the rarest Deere since it had a slant dash only to be let down finding out it wasn't all that rare. He was just offering you the same info and nothing else. All your comments will do is offend some of the extremly knowledgeable people on this board(clooney,G-man,tactorboy,etc) and you might need their help sometime, but they might ignore your question in fear that you will assault their "character" if you don't like the reply. Don't take this that I am dis-ing you at all, please. This board has many helpfull people.

I can agree with you on that, and I knew before that this wasn't a rare tractor. I was simply distinguishing it from a hand crank model. I think people should explain in their posts either slant or plain dash. I also never made any comparison to any model "B". I do appreciate all of your help!

Mike,

I wasn't trying to compare to the B. And I wasn't trying to put down your tractor. Sorry if I came off that way. All I have are 43's.

Here's the story. See, Deere came out with the slant dash in 39 when they put electric start on the A's and B's. When 41 came around. The A's and B's got there 6 speeds. Well, the B couldn't keep the slant dash because the shifter would hit the slant dash. But the A had no problem clearing the slant dash. So, all 39-47 A's that have electric start. Have a slant dash. But, B's that had the slant dash are 39-40. Not even 2 years. So, the B is a little hard to find slant dash. Glad to see another young person picking up the antique tractor bug. Glad you found your grandfathers A. I don't think I will find my grandfathers JD H. Some day.

Thanks for the info. sorry I lashed out at you, sometimes people just take things the wrong way. I am very excited about bringing the A home. It needs a lot of work. It has not been out in the weather but the engine is stuck. It is complete though, and I found the original shutters in a barn loft at my Grandfathers farm. Someone cut the rod that works them unfortunately.

Just to add to my previous comment, my Grandfather purchased this tractor new from a local JD dealer. My Father learned how to drive and farm with this tractor. I was lucky enough to track it down and purchase it. I plan to keep it in the family. I was not trying to find a "rare" tractor. I am a young collector at age 30, and I am trying to learn as much as I can about this and other JD tractors. If the young people don't get hooked on this kind of thing, then who is going to continue to carry the torch for future generations to come? I am simply trying to preserve a small piece of Americana. I couldn't care less about comparing this tractor to a rare model "B".

Mike,
I can agree with you on the young people needing to pick up on this hobby. I'm 22 and just getting started on my first tractor, a '40 Model A. Its nothing rare too, I just wanted to find a tractor to work on that I enjoyed. And I totally love it. I will buy old tractors for the rest of my life. No matter what I find, I'll totally enjoy it. Like you said, I'm trying to preserve a piece of the past. I take alot of pride in this, and I can see that you do too.

I'm 32. And I farm with all the old stuff (1908-1952). I have only early styled tractors that are common as dirt. But I love them too.
