I have two questions I need help with. First off, I have a 66 or so gas 4020. I was noticing the other day how rich it runs. I also noticed it has a marvel schebler carb on it, an old style one, not a boxey new age looking thing. Am I correct in suspecting that this is not the correct carb? I mean an old style schebler like a tsx model or something like from a G moline. My second question involves a 4010 diesel. It has roosamaster pump and we have owned it for years but it runs way too rich as well. I want to turn the pump down so it starts easier and the oil doesnt' get so dirty. Any help with this, I have heard you need to turn a screw back on the pump. Any help would be appreciated. I could get a pic of the carb on the 4020 if need be. Thanks in advance.

Some of the 3020/4020 tractors used the Marvel Schebler carb, I don't know what model it was. You would be doing yourself a favor if you replaced it with a Zenith, they were a nuch better all around carburator. Sorry I can't help you with any model #'s, I'm just going by my past experiences with these tractors. A parts manual would tell you what you need. Good luck.

I will look into getting a parts book. The tractor runs okay but I think it could run better if it was a bit leaner. I am afraid it will foul the plugs b/c it is blowing black smoke almost like the choke is on. It has a top end adjustment but that makes no differnce. It does not have a bottom end adjustment unless it is the sort of odd lookig metalic thing that is towards the block and feels like it might have a screw in it. However I would have to take the carb off to turn a screw if there is one in there. Thanks again.

Diesels are a variable fuel/air ratio engine.... They run at idle at 200-1 air-fuel ratio where gas/gasoline engines run at 12/14-1 A/F ratios. Your 4010 is running as lean as it can all the time now... IF You turn the pump adj. down it will limit the maximum fuel amount which will decrease the amount of HP You get from the engine.... If your blowing a bunch of soot into the oil Your not going to be happy turning the pump down....You may want to have the timing checked on the pump.... VERY critical on diesel engines. Can't help You on the 4020 Gas question.... All I know about them is they burn 50% MORE gas than a diesel burns fuel doing the same work!

We suspect that this pump has been turned up before. The reason we say this is that is smokes quite a bit and will blow 3 inches of fire out of the top of the muffler which has a tall pipe on it. We were wanting to put it back down a bit, we do not do anything heavy with this tractor, mainly auger work.

Three inches of flame , is that under full load ? Sounds like you might have a timing problem , unless the pump has taken apart and really turned up you shouldn't have that much flame . Is it the original pump ? I think the original 4010 pump was smaller than the 4020 and 4010's didn't have automatic advance some were changed over to 4020 style with advance if so the advance might be out of adjustment . On original 4010 pump there is no advance adj , just the pump mark to flywheel setting . Did you check for intake restrictions , air cleaner plugged , collapsed hose etc ? Just a couple things I can think of , Jim

I will look at the pump a bit closer, maybe get some numbers off of it and post them back here. I could take a picture of it if need be. The tractor smokes at all speeds and doesn't turn black until you get it going good, it blows fire on the top end, we don't open it up often, maybe to beat a thunderstorm back to the house or something.
