I have an Edison Splitdorf "CD" Mag for my 48D that won't fire. Took the cover off and the points look OK, but there's alot of oil around the coil. I figure the coil needs replacement, but is there anything else I should look for? Are there any easy tests I can do on it? Where is a good place to get one for this, most places just advertise Wico mags.

I have one Wico mag, which isn't right for the year of the tractor, but it's really hot and I was considering keeping it. I think it's an X (the one with the wires out the side instead of the front). Is this a better plan and let the other one go with another tractor? Thanks.

Dave, the parts for the E/S CD are getting real expensive. ~Do everything except the coil first & then put a coil in only if you have to. ~The usual problem with those E/S mags is sticking or worn little brushes that ride on the rotor. If those little brushes don't make contact it won't fire worth a darn.
~If you take it apart, remember it must be re-timed internally or it won't work.
~You might be better off using the Wico X or better yet a C as the C is a little closer to the look of the D era mag.
~I personally wouldn't let the E/S mag go as they are getting harder to find. Buy a cheap Wico X if you need a mag to put on a sale tractor.
~The other problem with the E/S CD is if the tractor is left unattended at a tractor show you are apt to loose it. Those things are getting scarce & theft is becoming popular..... ..

Hmm...Maybe I'll keep it then! Thanks, I'll look at it again one of these days. When you time it, there is a mark on the big gear that lines up with an "R" on the small one, correct? That's what it looked like to me.

Another thing I just noticed is that the Wico mag I have has a Prestolite tag on the body. It still says Wico on the cap, so am I safe to assume that this a a reproduced body? It looks like new. Thanks.

I enjoyed the part you said about getting a cheap Wico X mag. I watched one sell at an auction that was in a pile of parts on the ground and the guy paid $150 for it. Maybe it had some gold in it?
