D Brake Drum

How do I remove the brake drum on a D without turning brakes? I need to change the oil seal that is behind it. There is only about 4-5" between the shaft and the tire so I can't get a puller on it without taking off the rear wheel.
Thanks,
Ryan

Ryan, I usually slide the tire/wheel out about as far as I can & still have it stay on the splines.
~The last couple of D's I have re-sealed the service brake drum shaft on, I have managed to get 2 of the newer thin seals in with grease packed between them [I don't want to have to re-seal again due to seepage]..... .

Clooney,
I was hoping I could just get by with replacing the felt seal. How easy does the quill and everything I have to take out come off?

Ryan, actually the felt is just a dust/dirt seal & doesn't stop any oil from coming out. The oil seal is on the inside of the quill & the quill will have to come out.
~The gaskets between the quill & case are also shims so don't loose them, you will need to measure the thickness to purchase replacements [or if you don't ruin the originals reuse them with sealer]...It wouldn't hurt to reset the brake shaft end play while you are there.
~Before removing the quill, make sure you can get a replacement seal, [it is a strange size], the last "D" I did I couldn't find the inner seal, but measured the outer quill hole I.D & shaft O.D. & found a seal that would fit where the felt went. [sorry I don't remember the number]
~If you go with an outer seal you gain a couple of pluses, if the shaft is worn where the inner seal rides [there is a good chance of that] the outer seal will ride on a good shaft area & you can probably do it without pulling the quill [ at least I think you can, I always pull the quill to clean it]..... .....
