Is there a way to check to see if the generator is charging while it is in place on the tractor (JD420), i.e. checking voltages at the generator terminals, etc? Thanks for any help.

I think the best way is what clooney told you just check the A terminal or the guage while is running. The guage doesn't always work because you could have a charge but the guage could be shot.

i'll give it a whirl. The gage doesn't work, but it is cracked, so it may be shot.
Thanks

Tubba, you can measure the voltage at the [A] terminal on the generator but that won't tell you anything useful without knowing the load it is charging into.
~The best way if you want to do it with voltage is measure the voltage across the battery posts with the engine running at fast idle [should be somewhere around 6.8-7.5 volts].
~Does the ammeter show a charge with it running at fast idle?
~Does the ammeter show a discharge with the engine off & the lights on?
~If it isn't charging, ground the [F] post on the generator with the engine running at fast idle & see if it charges then, if so you have regulator problems, or wire problems between the regulator & generator. If it still doesn't charge you have generator problems or no battery power at the BAT terminal on the regulator, or open wires between regulator & generator.
~If you suspect the generator isn't working, post back or E-Mail me for directions on how to do a motoring test on it..... .

I'll give it a whirl. I was looking for a "quick and dirty" test I could do without removing the generator. The ammeter is bashed in on the dash, where it looks like the steering lever has hit it, so it doesn't show a charge or discharge. I plan to replace it anyway. If the generator needs work, there is a real good auto electric place near me, and they did me well with the Fords I had.
Thanks for the tips, have a good 4th
