Hi I am fifteen years old ,and just painted my Dad's 1948 John Deere model M , I got it loking like new I started it up drove it for about fifteen minutes got off the tractor and looked at the paint and it was bubbling of by the muffler and below. I put my hand on it and it was very very ( Hot ). I took the hood off checked and can not find any exhaust leak anywhere. Does amyone have any experience with anything like this ? My Dad'is supposed to drive the M in the 4th of July parade , along with myself on my 1946 John Deere (GM) .I am very disappointed . Thanks for any help Stephen G

a few years ago I restored a 420 and it had a heat shield on the manifold, are you sure this is not missing on yours. It was to dissapate the heat away from the outer surface of hood.

Steve

Just a thought. I have looked at more than one ole Johnny on which the fan belt was broken and just laying there or so loose that the fan rotated slowly. That will bring the oven under the hood up to high temp.

Also think about what kind of paint you used. If you used regular John Deere green then you could have a problem. I used Classic John Deere Green on my 1951 M. My tractor gets hotter then it should be. Also your manifold could be worn out. It could be to thin causing it to get to hot. Thats what mine did.

Stephen, those M's do run hot around the muffler but shouldn't burn the paint off unless there is an exhaust leak or the tractor is worked hard. ~You probably either have an exhaust leak or the paint wasn't cured yet. ~First thing is to check for an exhaust leak [just looking probably won't find it, & running with no load probably won't show it either]. Try running the tractor until hot then run at about 1/2 throttle, then use a damp rag or other method & momentarily close the muffler outlet off, do that for a few seconds at a time & look for leaks at the rear of the manifold, around the muffler to manifold, at the head to manifold gasket area & at the muffler seam. If a leak is found you have probably found your problem, if no leak is found you either didn't let the paint cure long enough [cheap enamel takes a long time to harden] or you have an engine problem.
~On my 40 [almost the same tractor], I used a hole saw on a long rod & drilled the muffler all the way through so most of the heat goes straight up & doesn't go to the outside of the muffler baffle. That tractor was painted about 8 years ago & still doesn't have any burnt paint on the hood.
~By drilling the muffler out it has a little louder bark now, but still not nearly as bad as a straight pipe..... ..... ..

I think some of the others are confused. As I read it you are having trouble with the paint burning on the outside of the hood. My JD M was painted by someone a long time ago and they must of had the same problem as it is burnt and bubbly looking just in the area around the hole where the muffler goesout the hood. These tractors run hot! If you ever worked one at night it is easy to see as the muffler glows red ! Just make sure the timing and carb. are set right as not to make it worse. The paint may of needed to cure as it does take some time to set up.I did a model 40 and I think the paint is fine on it,but it cured a long time before running and has not been worked hard since this probably helped it.

Are you talking about the paint on the outside of the hood bubbling? There should be a piece of metal welded to the inside of the hood where the muffler is. This will protect the outside of the hood from heat damage.

Thank you for the reply.I am talking about the sheet metal bubbling just above the decals. There is a heat shield on the inside of the hood, and the paint seems to bubble above the heat shield. This whole general area on the hood seems to be very hot. Thanks again Stephen G.

I'm 99% certain there should be a heat shield protecting the fuel tank from engine/exhaust heat too. Make sure it's there, they do get lost sometimes. Not good to boil the gasoline in the tank.

There's nothing that you can do to stop it. The manifolds quickly burn most paint off, and they did this when new, becuase they get HOT. The most common solution nowadays is to paint the manifolds with High tempature black paint-like the stuff used on propane grills.

It eventually burns the high temp stuff off too, but if you paint it right before a show or parade, it looks good.

Good luck and have fun in the parade! I'll be doing the same thing with a B and 14T baler!
