720 PTO Clutch Adjustment Advice

Ok, this is the story. I was using my 720 Gas Row Crop the other day with my JD 336 Square baler. It was working fine and engaging and disengaging properly. I got to some bigger windrows and it began to slip and then it would do what seemed like disengage the clutch and move the pedal on its own. I stopped using it in fear of burning up those expensive clutches. I got out my service manual today and proceeded to adjust the clutch. Well, as for the lands and groves, i made out that it moved about .025 of an inch instead of the recommended .090 The problem is that even after I turned the cam about 8 slots towards the tight side the clutch adjustment rod barely moves out more that before I adjusted it. Now I havent used the pto on the baler again to know how it works. I am just wondering if there could be enough worn parts inside the pto clutch to cause the adjustment check rod to give false readings. Im just wondering if anyone else has ran into this problem before. I do plan to go through the whole rockshaft housing this fall including the pto and renew seals and o-rings. Thanks for any ideas or personal experiences. Tyler

Try reading the owners manual for your JD. It gives the adjustments and directions how to properly do them. I was home on leave a few years ago and the 620 my Dad has was having the same problem. He had researched this, but had not tried to fix it. I followed the directions, and we have not had any problems with the PTO since.

it shouldn't take much adjustment to make the engagement harder. I suppose you did tighten the screw, this gets it out of the groves then you run the collar tighter then back up the screw back into a slot. I've tightened them a few turns and you can't get the lever to engage, it will be too tight.

I have a 620 which needs to have the pto clutch tightened a little. How do you turn the adjusting collar? With a long screwdriver? I tried once, but everything turned. I need some way to keep the pto shaft from turning. The pto brake may need tightening to do this.
