Did I hurt my motor?

Hi everyone,

For about a year now my 51 M had a pretty good size hole in the manifold. The hole was on the #1 cylinder. I just bought a new manifold, when I was taking off the old one there was a crack in the back of the intake side of the manifold. Alot of my Deere friends told me I can wreck my exhaust valves. I checked the valves and they look good but can you hurt you intake valves? The crack was big enough to see through. The motor ran good I just wanted to replace the manifold before something really bad happeaned. Any thoughts?

The crack could have caused it to run lean. Too lean, and you can burn the valves. Whether you did or not is hard to say. How much tinkering did you have to do to get it to run right with the new manifold? If you had to lean the carb, then it had probably been richened up at one time to compensate for the extra air coming in the crack. If not, then the valves may be burned. Just my version of the truth.

Why not perform a cylinder leak-down test or at the very least do a compression test and find out if the engine is sound??

I doubt that this would hurt your engine, if you have good compression and it is firing okay...I wouldn't be conderned.

Then too, if you run it a lot with the cracked intake manifild, there is the possibility it injested some dirt which might do damage to the cylinder bore and rings. But, if it has good compression, doesn't use oil and runs OK, chances are good that you did it little harm.

I'd say that if the valves look good, the clearances are OK, and it runs good, i wouldn't worry too much. The intake valves are pretty well cooled by the intake flow of fuel-air mix, and even with a crack in the manifold, that doesnt affect the flow past the valve that cools it. It might not run too well, sicne that extra air coming in the leak will mess up the fuel-air ratio. So you would have to adjust the carb to compensate for it, which is probably why it was run that way for so long.
just my thoughts, and hope it helps
