I have a 1959 JD 730. I got a knocking noise in 3rd and 6th gears. I think it is a chipped gear but I am not for sure. Can anyone tell me if I can remove these gears and bearings without breaking the tractor apart?

Ken, it sounds like you have the optional 5th or optional 3rd-5th gear set in your trans. [do you have a fairly fast 5th gear 8-9 MPH?]
~The production trans has 4th & 6th on the same gear set not 3/6. The optional high speed 5th or 3/5 option has 3/6 as the same gear set. Keep that in mind when looking for replacement gears.
~In either case the [X] & 6th gears are inside the trans & the transmission has to come apart to get to them....

rebuilt 730 transmission for friend some years ago....quite a bit of tear down necessary, pull flywheel, side covers, remove gears....parts are little pricy, don't have to pull tractor apart. Chuck in KY.
