I am in the process of restoring a 47 D. While cleaning the head surface with a light rotary wire brush, I started gouging some sort of material from around the valve seats on one of the cylinders. The material was relativly soft and powdered when the wire brush hit it. When I was finished there was a pocket about 3/8" deep from around the lower section of the intake valve seat to the center of the chamber. The strange thing is that it looks like the head was a bad casting and was filled rather than erosion caused by years of use. Has anyone else experenced this? Did Deere fill bad castings to make them usable? Will this head be usable or must I find another? Thanks in advance.

I owned and operated a automotive machine shop for 30yrs. I saw this same thing one time. We decided what had happened was the cyl head was rusted real bad at some time and the person had soaked the head in muratic acid for along period of time, like days or longer the acid will eat on that rust forever to where you can scrape the metal away like lead it will even be a little shiny. After checking into the history that is what happened to it. Prior to that I had soaked a Dltx carb in muratic acid for a week and when I pulled it out I didnt have any threads left on the carb neck for bowl nut.the rest of the carb you could peal like butter.
