I have a 1941 Model A JD that will not run properly. I've never rebuilt the carb. it seems to flood and the engine quits. Although, I put new Champion d-14 spark plugs in and after two short runs (poorly) One or both of the plugs stop firing thru the end (electrode) but will arc from the side of the plug to the engine. Is the plug bad ? One would think ! What caused this to happen ? wrong size plug ? It has happened twice. Does anyone know what plug I should use ? Could this be the problem or could it be both Carb. and plugs ? I guess I should rebuild the carb anyway.

Also, I have oil dripping from the cock shuts when they're closed and the engine is running. Is this common for two cylinder tractors or should I install new rings ? I hope someone can help me. I'm not much of a mechanic but I love my old tractors ! Thanks !

I would rebuild the carb and install either d-21 champion or c-86 or c-87 ac plugs If the tractor is not being worked you need a lot hotter plug to burn todays gasoline.

Thanks for the reply BrokenWrench ! I never thought I would get such a response from everyone. I'll give the hotter plugs a try. Seems to be in line with the other replies. Thanks for sharing your knowlege !

Rodney:
I had the same problem with the releif cocks on my 46 A.. Replaced them with new ones from JD (around 20 bucks each) and no more leaking. The part # is AB1898R and are avaliable from JD. Good luck.

Clyde,

Thanks for the advice ! I never thought about that, but it sure makes sence! I'll try that. So you're from Moultrie, Ga. I'm from just North of you between Cordele and Vienna. Actually due west of Vienna on the Flint river.

Thanks Again !

Regards,

Rodney Jacobs

The usual test for new rings is whether or not you have low compression. Find out why the cock shuts leak oil (or anything including compression) and fix them or replace them. Then do a compression test before replacing rings.

I don't know the history of the tractor, but a carb. rebuild job is probably necessary. If you do it, do a serious job of it: clean out the internal lines with the right size drill bits, replace bushing ang throttle is there is excess play, etc.

I don't know the plug type, but physically compare them to old ones. My guess is your carb. is the problem, but I'm not sure.

Thanks Rollo ! I think I will rebuild. (not me though). I plan to use a hotter plug as well and check compression. I'll check into the cockshutt leak too. Thanks again for the advice !
