The pto on my 1960 830 was leaking so I changed the seal. It was a differnet type seal but the old style is no longer made by JD. It stopped the leak until the pto was running. I can grab the shaft and it probably has about 1/16 inch play side to side. Do I need a new shaft or bearings? What do I need to do?

You probably should replace the bearing there. I do not think you can get a new shaft, you may find a good used one. Usually the bearing is all it needs. You can look, and clean the shaft up real well, and if there are some tiny pits, mix up some jb weld, put it all around the area where the seal rides, and then after it hardens use some emory cloth and make smooth. Then install the oil seal, use some grease to help slide the seal on and you should be good to go. Good Luck
