David, when you have it apart is a very good time to go through the P/S pump & water pump. There is nothing more aggravating than to get a tractor back together & painted then have to take it back apart again to repair oil leaks or malfunctions. ~If you haven't had it running & don't know the history of the engine & have the money, a cam regrind would be a good investment at teardown time. ~The P/S pump & cam are a pain to do once the engine is back together again & if it has a worn cam could cause you problems to get it running right [you will chase everything from the carb to the distributor & nothing will make it run good if it has a worn cam].
~While you have it apart go through the governor for loose weight pins & bearings & if the oil filter has a bent can [the stud will be crooked & off center] repair it or replace it as that will really effect the oil pressure.
~Personally, I would go through the trans & PTO while it is in the shop & torn down but if it needs bearings or other parts could add up to a pretty healthy repair price [it's not unusual to put $500.00 + in trans bearings & seals]
~As for the brass tag, it's just made from brass instead of aluminum or steel & adds nothing to the function or durability of the tag & in my opinion adds nothing to the value of the tractor. The year, model & type of tractor are the controlling factor & all the same models have the same type of tags so if you have a model & year tractor that has a brass tag, all the others in that age & model group have one also...

David,

Clooney's right. Do it all. Makes a much more beautiful tractor. I'm doing one now - pretty much everything you're talking about doing(minus transmission work, luckily, mine checked out to be in great shape and quiet!).

If this is your first, the cam is a little tricky to get out but it is worth it. Don't get frustrated. Don't forget to send followers/lifters to machine shop for resurfacing too!!! There are two oil lines from the oil pump, bottom of the crank case area. Remove both of those and remember placement - makes cam removal easier. Replace both cam bearings, local bearing / automotive parts house has them in stock and cheaper-Timken. Another thing to remember - the crank is timed to the cam (checked inside the block) and them the govenor is timed to the cam also (checked on the outside cover of the govenor housing).

Email me if you need anything.

David, Even though you might be a super mechanic, I recommend getting the manual for the tractor.Do you know the history of the tractor or owner? Go through the engine, try it out in the field after checking all your fluid levels. Listen for noise and watch for fluid loss. That will pretty much tell you what you have.(Earl in Illinois)

Seamo i have no clue of the tractors history other than it was droped of a trailer and broke some part which i have replaced all but the raditor and straps have not found them yet. the engine was all ready out and a part due to being locked up from water in the left cylinder I do have a manual on this tractor because I am just a back yard wanabe the tractor will take lots of work but it will come together in time more slow than shore.

thank for the input
