4320 noise

I've got a 1972 4320 with a noise in the hydraulic system. At first I thought it was coming from the main pump. Kind of a whining/ buzzing sort of noise. I have narrowed it down to the lines going to the steering assembly under the dash. Steering works OK as does the rest of the hydraulic system. I have been told to change the hydraulic fliud and filter from one source, and another told me to bleed the steering system. The noise is present from start-up until shut-down, and increases with engine RPM's

Maybe some of you experts have had a similar experience with this.

Any thoughts??

Steve

You could have inlet or outlet valve or seat damage in the main hyd. pump-----that will cause noise, but if there is still good PSI, & no bad vibration, I wouldn't worry about it

I would start by bleeding the steering valve under the dash. Use a clear piece of snowmobile fuel line run back the the transmission filler hole. With clear line you can see when the air bubbles disapear. If that doesn't do it there may be a high preasure internal leak. The other simple thing that comes to mind is are all of the clamps on the steering lines under the hood and on the radiator suport bracket. You will need to look at a service manuel on the steps to bleed the valve you have to cycle the steering wheel and hold it one way and I don't remember the particulars.

SOUNDS LIKE POSSIBLEY THE THERMO RELIEF VALVE IN THE ROCKSHAFT IS LEAKING ,CHECK AND SEE IF THE SANDWICH BETWEEN THE SCV BOX AND THE 3PT. VALVE BOX IS GETTING HOT.ALSO CHECK THE PTO VALVE FOR CORRECT ADJUSTMENT. DON

Where would this relief valve be located? I am looking at a service manual as I am typing this and don't find such a critter. Also, the noise is quiet only when I use the remotes.

The valve is in the rockshaft valve houseing, you will have to remove it to see it. take it to your dealer and he can set the pressure for you. the reason the noise quits when you use the remotes is the pressure dropes momentarily so the thermo valve seats. Don

I am probably way off base here but we have A 2840 and had somewhat the same problem, some noise and when the tractor was hot we had trouble starting it. Seems pretty unrelated right. We were bailing hay one day and after A break went to start the tractor back up it would only grunt. For some odd reason I turned the steering wheel and it immediately spun over and started, my dad said I was crazy so I shut it down tried it again and had the same result. Come to find out there was A problem with the tractors building up hydraulic pressure in the power steering and we learned from our local dealer there had been A recall to add A line to the side of the tractor that acts as A bypass. After it was installed we had no more trouble. Like the earlier post I would check for hot spots there may be some obstruction or something that is causing it to bind up causing your noise. Probably nothing useful but heck it didnt cost you nothing. Good luck
