John and Dave, Forgive me if I am intruding, just want to add one more thing along with my personal experience. But first a question. Is this return hose from the steering metering pump clamped on?
In my experience the most common problem with blowing off this clamped on hose is usually the steering valve, located under the hood. Normal leagkage at this hose is one pint in one minute. I usually convert this hose and fittings over to the "flared fitting" style used by the later 40 series tractors. This is only a temporary fix, it does not fix the real problem, only hides it as this hose does not "pop off". However, if the oil seepage is extreme it can still rupture the hose or cause damage elsewhere. I once had a 4430 that was leaking one gallon in 20 seconds. Good luck! Doug

JB, I would be happy to try and help you but there is something I need to know first before I can. On 30 series tractors there was two different types of steering systems used. You refered to the valve body under the hood (not the dash) which would make it the later system. The first / early system was the old twenty series type system that used the large steering valve, the second / later system used the metering pump type that has the small pump under the dash verses the large steering valve plus the valve body you refered to. Both good systems but quite different from one another. Sounds like that you have a large high pressure leak to the return circuit which is the line that you are having the problem with. If the leak is so large that the return circuit cannot handle its volume something has got to give and in your case it blows the line off the fitting. Cause would be in two different areas depending on which system you have. If your system is the later and the steering block under the hood was replaced with a new one (not a used one) I would suspect your problem is a restriction in you return hose or a fitting on the end of it. Remove , inspect and replace this hose if it has not been done already. If you are not sure what system your tractor has post back with your tractor serial number as it will tell me which system you have and I will work off that information. Also which transmission does this tractor have as that too will be a factor in trouble shooting your problem. I see you posted PS Did this mean Power Steering or Power Shift. Let me know and I will try and help. Dave W.

PS=powersteering. Thanks a lot for your help. this tractor belongs to a friend of mine and I just found out that the steering block under the hood was replaced with a used part, with your information it looks like this is where the problem is. The return hose has been replaced and looks to be unrestricted. Thanks a lot John
