Critical Rookie Mistake

I'm afraid I've made a critical rookie mistake. I replaced the radiator core on my 48 A with one that I bought from my local radiator shop. I was a little concerned when I got it because the new one wasn't as thick as the old one - but I went with it thinking the radiator shop knows what it's doing. I've buttoned the tractor back up and added water - it now holds only 8 gallons vs the 8-3/4 that it should. After reading a few notes in the archives on this board, I'm really concerned now that my cooling system is going to be insufficient. I guess I'm just going to have to run it and see what happens. If I'm getting too hot I might look into adding an add-on reciruclation pump to boost flow. I'm interested in knowing if others have bought these "smaller" replacement cores and how they've turned out.

So, to sum up, you thought you had made a mistake, but you were wrong.

I don't think you are going to have any problems, I doubt if you are going to work it as hard as it was worked when it was new. Unless you plan on pulling 3 14" plows in black dirt or sit it in front of a hammer mill all day, you should be alright.HJ

Mike

This may be a classic case where bigger is not necessarily better lol. I am not a radiator scientist but do know that just plain ole volume is not a sole determining factor on radiators. You may just have more cooling capacity. Try it out and see. Good Luck

I dont think you will have any problems cuz they run better hot as long as it is not excessive.

Unless it is greatly smaller, it may even work better than the old one, since it is new. Under heavy load these tractors were designed to run pretty warm, that would be disking and plowing. Just fooling around the needle will probably not even come off the peg. 200 degrees is not uncommon when really working the tractor. It was a necessity in the all fuel tractors, so as to burn the heavy fuel. Russ
