I could get to the oil pump gears, but I couldn't get the pump out (or shouldn't I). Do I want to try to get the pump out?

I would sure try to get it out. Isn't there a screen where the oil enters the pump? It's probably thoroughly filthy in your engine, so like I posted, I would work toward getting everything out of the crankcase so I could clean it thoroughly. There's a filter between the pump and the bearings, but you could quickly clog it with junk and end up sending unfiltered oil to the bearings if it bypassed the filter, and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what happens then. Theres not much more damaging to internal engine parts than dirty oil, besides no oil at all.

Any advice on how to get it out? I unhooked the big oil line and one of the little ones from the pump and the other little one at the other end, and removed the nuts from the bottom, but the oil pump doesn't move. I don't want to be too rough with it. It feels like flimsy sheet metal. Also, the coupler seems to be stuck on the bottom part of the shaft.

Try working from the bottom side of the tractor. Can you get a screwdriver or chisel worked in between the pump housing and the main case and try to get it out that way? That would be my approach. Soak everything good with penetrating oil and then work at it. You might also try using a large pair of channel-locks and get the pump housing turning in the case, then it may come loose for you. Remember, patience is the key. The shaft can come with the pump or stay engaged with the cam drive, it really doesn't matter either way at this point.
