Mark,

I did a little checking on what has become my favorite library, the web.

There's a good discussion of the 1 wire Delco SI configuration on the link below. You might take a look and see if this matches up with the alternator you have. Also, note that the Delco doesn't kick in until 3,000 RPM. Your 1020 doesn't want to run that fast. So if this the setup you have, you may want to rethink using it.

Mark,

I hope you mean the ignition switch, because aside from the diagram I already sent you; this is the only other electrical diagram that is in my service manual.

Wow no kidding I'm going to have to get ahold of either someone or something that can show the wiring diagram as I have never wired up an ignition system before other than replacing a part or two here and there. Any other ideas?
I'm getting anxious to at least hear this thing run. Will the local Deere dealer possibly print a copy of the diagram for me or are they going to force me to purchase the whole service book for it?
Thanks
Mark

Mark,

It's surely worth a try, but I'd be surprised if the JD manual has any more wiring info than the I&T manual.

The other fly in the ointment is that you have that Delco alternator with the built in voltage regulator. Probably the best thing is to get a diagram for that part -- Delco's suggested application diagram -- and see if you can back it in to the Deere diagram. There may be an old hand at the JD dealer who's seen that Delco replacement setup, too. No fun trying to figure out somebody's custom setup when there's no documentation.

Ok I just ordered the service manual from the local TSC. Should be in by friday. I was really surprised to see that they even had the carb rebuild kit for the 1020, cool, and only 22.95.
I even seen completely rebuilt carbs looking just like new for the ford 2n, 8n and 9n.
They also had complete wiring harnesses, too cool.
Thanks again for all your help

Mark,

The local TSC here carries I&T manuals. Same thing I've got. Amazing the old stuff they carry in those stores.

Did you notice the bit about the resistor / and or pulley size on that link I posted for the Delco alternator. Looked like that guy knew what he was doing.

I think it's kinda neat that they have that stuff readily available for the tractor owners.
Yes I did read that about the pulley size.
It makes sense to me that if the tractor motor is running at about 2000 rpm then the alternator should be runing at about 5000 to 6000 rpm due to pulley sizes, so 3000 rpm should be no problem for the setup I have. When I get it running I'll hook the amp meter to it and measure the charge current or draw and post it.
Thanks for the URL.
