I have spent several days trying to get the governor to carb control rods on my 1496 A adjusted with no luck.. I remember that I had to replace one rod during rerstoration, that one being the rod between the throttle control and the tension spring on the governor control arm. I'm wondering if I got the wrong part (again..!!).
If you have a correct running early styled model A, It would be a great help to have the measurments from the throttle to spring and from the governor control arm to carb. I would be greatful for the help.

Eugene got you fixed up on those rod dimensions, but I was wondering if you had checked that the governor shaft was rotated to the correct relationship with the governor arm ? It's been a long time since I had one of those apart, but I seem to remember that you rotated the governor shaft all the way in one direction, then tightened down the lever on it.

Just a thought that if it's is out of location, it will have poor governor action.

Frank: That could very well be the problem.. It does not have very good action.. Do you know the exact steps to check or correct that problem. I do not have a service manual on the A but do the B and it is not mentioned in the B manual.

Clyde:

Here is what I remember. You rotate the shaft and lever in opposite directions and then tighten the lever on the shaft. If you stand there and think it through, you have a 50/50 chance of getting it right the first time.

If I were to guess, I would say to rotate the shaft CCW (when viewed from above), while holding the lever back towards the tractor. The object is to remove all the play from the action. I think I once read it in an old 60 manual that I had. It said which way to hold things, but the gist is to rotate the lever and shaft in opposite directions.

It should make a clear difference ! It did on my "A".

Don't the gov. shafts have a groove in them so the pointed set screw can center in them ??

I'll bet your 48 A had a hole for the set screw. I aint EVER seen a A govrnor shaft that didn't. Iff'n your A didn't have that notch yawl had a bad shaft. Never seen a A govrnor shaft that had to be turned to lline it up. When the set screw tip was in that shaft hole it was where it belonged. Iff'n yawl don't believe that get yourself a A and look at it. Bet Clyde can tell ya there's a notch hole.

Randy:

Perhaps my memory is fading, but I really remember chasing a governor action problem, and had to rotate that shaft to one extreme. I'll try to find out where I read it, or else find the source of my confusion.

By the way, you have a long phone cord Randy. I was out in Englewood, CO a couple of weeks ago. It wasn't near Georgia at all, y'all.

Yo what does Englewood, CO have to do with Georgia? You must read a map like you read service manuals. Always knew you yuppies from Co. were weird.

Not from Colorado, Randy, just there on a visit. The "T" in F-I-T is Tallahassee as in Florida.

As far as reading service manuals, I sure wish I could find it in a service manual. Until then I can only imagine that I confused it with some other procedure, but I really thought I remembered reading that somewhere. I'm really at a disadvantage on the road...no manuals handy to mis-read.

Clyde:

Sorry if I've steered you wrong. Have you found any other likely problem with that governor ?
