The chain holding the crow bar to the flywheel was catching on a bolt head near the middle of the flywheel and a bump that seems to be a cover for part of the transmission. I replaced the chain with a piece of wire and now the block and right piston are all the way forward. Three out of four total rod cap nuts have now been removed. The fourth has a cotter pin in it. Should I take the vise grips to the cotter pin tomorrow?

David-----

Keep the posts and pictures coming on the progress of your 50. Although I havent offered any help (youre in more capable hands already), Ive followed your progress from the start. With Frank and Clyde pretty much wrapping up their projects you were very timely with the start of your posts. Remember, everything that you are facing, the rest of us either have faced or will face, sometime. Ive learned a lot as you moved from one hurdle to another. Best of luck with the old 50. They are such a neat tractor. Cant wait to see the finished product.

First off, I'm with Bob, do it today if you can.

Second, another way to get a bent up cotter pin out, after you straighten out the ends, is to use a pair of side cutters and use them to get a grip on the head end of the cotter pin and leverage the cutters against the rod cap. When you have moved it a ways, take another bite with the side cutters and repeat. Should come right out that way.

I'd get right at it now. Then tomorrow you can be fighting those pistons, trying to get them out of the block. Sounds like more fun than just resting up, eh? Good luck with it.

And make sure there are cotter pins in all four bolts before you put that top cover back on.

Is a G supposed to have cotter pins in the rod cap bolts also? When I took the caps off yesterday none of the eight bolts had a cotter key

If the nuts are castellated and there are holes in the bolts, there should be cotter pins in them.
Cheap insurance.

With the 50, the top bolt for the right rod didn't have a cotter pin. The bottom bolt for the left one had a strip of flat wire that looked like a straightened out cotter pin. All of the nuts were notched.

David, They should have all had cotter pins in them. Whether to take it out tomorrow, is your decision. I think I'd rest up a couple days.
