I have a chance to buy a JD #48 loader for my 3020. I also can buy a JD # 148 loader for twice the price. Can anyone help with comparison??? Thanks!!

Keep in mind for comparison; do they both have the required mounting brackets and do they come with a valve if you need it. Those items can add another $500 before you know it.

I agree with Mike and John. The 148 would be a better match for the 3020, but the cost (half price) of the 48 matched to its lift-capacity and "ease of use factors" should be considered.

My Quick Tach 48 has a lift capacity of 2400 lbs vs the 148's 3000 lbs. The 48 structure is somewhat overbuilt relative to its intended use, but you will find very few 48's with abuse welds.

The 148 is havier by a couple hundred lbs and this has noticable effects on the tractor's manuvering and the operational loading dynamics.

If you need the greater lift capacity, as well as breakaway capacity, etc. than the 148, at twice the price, is absolutely the way to go. But, if you can do your 3020 utility chores within the lift/breakaway parameters of the 48 (at half the price) the 48 is worth considering.

Terry, I agree with John in that I would spend the extra money and get the 148 loader. They have more lift capacity, stronger design, easier accessibility to the tractor for servicing (not a strong point on the 48) and they will also mount on later tractors if you ever trade off your 3020. My humble opinion. It is always easier to spend the other fellow's money..:-) Mike

Both good loaders. The 48 mite be a tad lite for the 3020. But it was a darned good loader in its day, 60s-early 70s.Had a super strong wrap around frame that distributed loader strain and shock to minimize tractor-frame stress. I tend to think that I`d go the extra for the 148 assuming its in good shape tho. Mainly because with a bit of engineering and a welder you can built a quick tach setup so you can drop the bucket and swap to forks or whatever easily. The 48 was limited in that department unless you redesigned/rebuilt the bucket. If you can, run a tractor into the loader frame and see which one mite give you operating advantages and good visibility.
