I Broke My Baler!!!!

I picked up a 14T baler over the past winter. Everything seemed fine on it. I went through it, best I could, with the operators manual in hand. It cycled for me with the chamber empty. The twine caught properly in the twine disk and, ready for that first bale, I headed for the field. The rest is not a pretty story. The very first time the needles cycled with the chamber full I broke BOTH needles. Both needles were broken at approximately the same place, about 8 inches from the tip. I cant find any evidence of collision with anything on the one tip that I found. I also found the roller chain that drives the knotter and needles. It was stretched and broken. This is the small chain under the little hood on top, near the knotter. First thing is to get two new needles coming. Im sure Im in for a good kick in the pants when I get the price for them!

Now, I need to figure out what broke all this stuff up and how to correct it. Has this happened to anyone else with a 14T? Can anyone offer any insight as to what might have happened and why? I have to get this machine back in the field- pronto!

Thanks Ahead,
Putt Putt

Done that. Have the old needles welded up, using new as pattern. Time the baler to the old then when you are satisfied put in the new. They were $75.00 ea in 1972.

The needle steel will take a lot of abuse and welding. Also a lot of adjustment on the bracket.

Sounds like it may have been out of time. Follow the timing procedures to the tee and you should be OK with the timing. Also check that the safety stop for the plunger is adjusted and working correctly. Any time the needles enter the bale chamber the safety stop should also should come out to keep the plunger from damaging the needles in event timing is lost due to a failed drive chain. The third thing to check is the needle brake, This will hold the needles out of the way when baling and in event the baler hits a bump the brake will keep the needles from entering the bale chamber from the shock from the bump. If the brake did fail the safety stop still should of protected the needles if it was functioning correctly. The brake is a disk that has two replaceable pads located on the knotter drive shaft. Good Luck, Dave W.

Your baler was out of time. Your ok if the bale chamber is empty because there is no hay to for the plunger to push and break the needles. The needles have to be timed to the plunger so that when the plunger is in full rearward position the needles are in the tieing position. The not is tied and the needles go down as the Plunger goes back foward to gather hay for the next bale. As I remember with a 14T you also have to worry about timing for the raker fingers. Good luck. The most of my problems come from the knotter.
