Gents: I'm having governor problems on a 1946 A. When I first got this tractor, The governor did not work. During the restoration process, I completly rebuilt it, New bearings etc. Now the thing still does not work or works very little. I thought I had adjusted the control rods as outlined in the service manual. With the throttle all the way forward and the carb all the way open, the control rod should lack about 1/2 a hole from connecting. Now, the throttle has very little travel and the tractor either runs very fast or dies. I'm planning on putting a tach on her today to set the throttle limit at 1200 RPM. Any thoughts on the governor problem would be very helpful. I hope I don't have to take it back off, but..!!

don't know any thing about an A but my big problem on my 60 was the governor spring, it is spring steel and it was bowed from 50 years of use, replaced with a new one and what a difference, like a new tractor..

Make sure cotter key on carb isnt binding on carb body or the rod isn't twisted after you tighten lock nut. When you overhauled the governor is the fork in the right place make sure not dragging on spool?Does not go in groove. Earl

Do as Clooney has said. My B is not set up perfectly as the book says. You have to find the sweet spot for every motor. And the other reason I am responding. The motor is set to run at 975 RPM. Not 1200 RPM. DON'T set the motor to run at 1200 RPM.

Clyde, disconnect the governor rod from the governor to the carb & work the carb by hand while holding the rod coming from the governor.
~If the carb has an internal problem it will act like you are saying & will seem like it is the governor.
~If the engine runs good through all the RPM ranges you probably still have a governor problem, if it doesn't run good or won't idle your problem is in the carb & no amount of governor adjustment will help.
~While operating the carb by hand you should be able to feel the governor trying to move the rod to compensate for the speed you are running the engine at....

Thanks for the suggestions..
With the rod removed from the carb and the tractor running at different speeds, The governor does NOT try to compensate for the different speeds. The tractor runs thru all speed cahnges flawlessly. This carb was rebuilt by Doug Burrey and works just fine. Guess I'll take the governor off and have a look..!! The guy I got the tractor from said the governor had just been rebuilt and it did not work then, thats the reason I rebuilt it again.. Maybe I need to take a look at that rebuild to make sure the fork is in the right place. I put it back the way it was when I took it apart.. That may be where the problem is.. Wrong on both rebuilds..!!

Sounds like when I took my 43A apart. Took the pistons out and found the oil control ring sitting in the 3rd groove from the top and a compresion ring in the 5th (bottom) groove where the oil control ring is to go. Can't trust the last person that worked on it to get it right. Sorry to hear that the govenor has to come off.
