I have a '57 420W. Is it true that the final drives utilize oil from the rear differential? Or, do they have a separate fill and drain? I can't locate any fill or drain plugs.

According to JD dealer, the reason why I can't find any is that it does not have a separate fill and drain. Only the Hi-Crop and Dozer version have separate final drives. Any 2Cyl. fans know the answer?

Thanks.

Thanks for the advice. Can you help me locate them? I have been staring at the drawing in my operator's manual and tractor for days. I am going nuts trying to find the plugs...drain and fill.

I really hate this but your dealer acorrding to my service manual is very wrong. There should be a drain plug underneath the final drive housing. There should be two allem\n plugs on the face of the final drive housing. one low level and one full. Now the book also calls for different amounts of oil , depends on which final drive you have. And they do not get oil from the rear ead. They are individual units.

W chassis trans drain is hiding just under the left foot rest/platform. Fill port is just above the right side foot rest/platform. Each final drive is a separate resevour. Use the pipe plugs on the back with the 3/8 or 1/2 square drive. If the trans fluid is origional or grungy, drain, fill with diesel, jack the hind wheels off the ground & SECURELY block up the tractor. Run in gear for a few minutes, drain & refill with GL1 140 for the least noise. GL5 140 for the least cost or Modil 1 / Amsoil 140 for the best protection. Opinions vary on choice of lube however.
