Heres what ive got. My 4430 would not start. I jumped it off and ran fine for 2-3 hrs. Tried to start it again and its dead. Took off batteries, one tested bad other needed charging. Charged one, replaced other, ran fine for 2-3 hrs. Tried to start it again but it was dead. Took off alternator and had it tested - said it was good. Now Im stuck. What do I do next. What sould the voltmeter read with the engine running?

Any help appreciated

Heath

Your alternator has a block with 2 wires in it that plugs to the alternator. A nd 1 heavier wire that is connected to a bolt. Take a 12 volt test light and test the 2 wire block for current. One of the wires should be hot all the time and the other should be hot only when the key switch is turned on. If one of them is not hot when the switch is on, You need to follow the dead wire in the harness starting at the alternator. Peel back about 6-8 inches of harness covering then probe into the wire with the test light. I have seen alot of 30 and 40 series that toward the end of the harness has a broken wire. Also test the heavy wire that should also be hot all the time. If you find where the wire is broken just cut it there and attach a new wire from there and to the alternator. Hope this helps you out

The two wire that plug on to the top of the alternator have a diode in one of them to stop current from backing up to drain the battery if it goes bad it will go dead sitting and it will not charge try to charge the battery and let it set over night if it goes dead it could be it John deere sells that wire to bypass the bad wire in the harness it even comes with instructions on how to install
