Ok, I've got my wife convinced that we need another green machine in the garage. Now I need help in choosing a model - that's where you folks come in.

We'd both like to get somthing big, narrow front and not break the bank account, well not too bad! So we've seen 720's and 730's at shows that perk our interest - so what do ya recommend???

Check the photo ads in this site - search under tractors about 6 pages in. Nice 730 Diesel electric start - looks like it has all the bells and whistles for $5250.

720 and 730s are basically the same tractor except for some operator comfort upgrades on the 730. 730s are more popular due to extra Yellow and smooth sheet metal hence more costly. $4000-$6000 for a nice 730. If you want a collector/show tractor get the 730 If you want a worker it doesn't matter just get a good one.

Get out your pocket book if you want a 30 series.

JD built in Dubuque such as a L,LA,M,40,320,330,420,430,435 or 440 can have a true three point hitch ( 40 & later), remote hydraulics, live pto ( mid 420,430,435 & 440), PS starting with some early 420's. They are handy for small jobs and park in a standard automotive garage spot. They can be hauled with a modest class three trailer hitch on a rented U-Haul auto trailer with an ordinary drivers licence. Usually the the one tractor kept from large collections if selling & moving into town.

Ok, here's some answers to your questions.

The other green machines are a 40 narrow front (casually restored and used by a neighbor for haying) and a little 345 garden tractor (no restoration required )

My use will be simply for showing, mowing, and haying. Nothing really intense, I'd just like to have something big that can do the work without any sweat.

I've seen several models of 720s/730s up for sale, are there any that are preferred over others? Also, I've seen several in ads with the pony and with electric - are they interchangable?
What are the major problems I might encounter when I'm shopping for one?
Bang for the buck - how do they compare to some of the other models you folks mentioned?
Total cost - lets say you get one for the indicated $4500 what would you expect to be a realistic total for it to be reliably running?

Thanks for the help!!!!!

When I was a kid, I worked on a farm that had a couple of 720s and a 730. All were on LP. I liked the 730 a lot better. In fact it was my favorite tractor on the place. I sometimes spent 13 hours a day on them during the summer. Also there were two 4020s, two 1256 Farmalls, a MF 65 and a UTU Moline.

I have never gotten to use or be around a 720 or 730. How would one compare to a MF 65 Diesel?

My neighbor's got a MF 65 Diesel that I've used several times, and it's got a lot of power for the light farming and toying around that I do.

What old JDs compare with the MF 65?

Hans

My father pulled a 5 bottom plow with his 720, diesel,(granted he has sandy soil) I don't know much about the massey, but a 720 or 730 is probably bigger than what is considered a utility tractor

I couldn't say about the diesels. The 720s 730 and the 65 Massey were all on LP. We never gave them an actual comparison on pulling power. The heaviest pulling we did with the JDs was a 14' tandem disc. Never tried that with the Massey, so I don't know how it would do. All I remember using the Massey on was a wheat drill, springtooth harrow, and a bushhog. If we had to pull something bigger, the 4020s or 1256s were used.

Gary, You said "another". What do you have now? What would you use the new one for? I like anything with power steering 60,620,630,70,720,730. Also like the A,B,&G. I agree with you, 720 and 730 are good choices.

Well, it just depends what YOU want. If there is a 720 near by for sale, get it, if the price is right. the same with a 730. I would prefer a 730 diesel. Its all up to you. you may be able to get a good one for around $4500
