4230 worth?

I've got this 4230 with a bad engine (404). Looks like they ran it out of oil. This tractor has a four post ROPS with no top, no seat or seat assembly. Has a quad-range transmission, decent tires, wide front end and I also have the "roll-o-matic" tricycle front end for it. It's in rough shape, I have a good hood for it too. Any ideas what this thing might be worth? I'm in South Alabama, and I've decided to sell. Thanks..... ..... ..

Tubba raises several good points, although you could find several other engine options rather then going back through Deere - and quite a bit cheaper, too. If just boils down to how much you want to spend. You can drop a pile of money in it, but a dedicated parts scrounger could probably find you the essential parts for less money - getting a shortblock out of an old combine, etc. Not having a Sound-Gard on it would kind of put me off, too - unless you live in a mild climate.

Like G-man says, you could make a long term project out of it, and scrounge the parts as you can find them and get a deal, and get it together that way, too. And I meant to say in my post that the basic engine was ~$7,000 not the short block. A short block is about half the engine and youcould save a liittle that way. As G-man says, you could get away for a lot less than going thru Deere. Another thought is that it could be a "hangar queen " parts tractor for another similar Gen II that is in better shape. just my two cents to go with the two cylinders.

Sounds like the poor thing is little more than a hulk. what a shame, good Deere's deserve better than that, at least a loving collector to restore it, unfortunately although most collectors could handle a 2-cyl, restoring a sophisticated Generation II would be much more of a challenge, besides they are not yet collectobel the same way a Popper is. As a starting point, if it were in good shape, it might fetch $12,000 to $15,000 depending on year and hours. Then deduct the cost of an engine overhaul. In Illinois in 2001, a reman 404 short block from Deere lists for $7,119 assuming you have a usable core, $8,600 if you dont, so than you add to that the costs of building up the short block to a complete engine assuming the original fuel pump, etc are good and putting it in the tractor, nothing if you do it yourself to a couple of grand it you have to hire it, so now we are up to at least $7,000 to $10,000 just to get a good engine in the beast, and that says nothing about the rest of the tractor, trans, etc which might not be in too good a shape, considering the level of maintenance to be expected from someone who lets an engine run out of oil. So you can see where this is going, you might be lucky to get more than a couple of grand for it, maybe 4 or 5 grand if the rest isnt too bad and you fine a Gen II fan. Wish you luck finding the Gen II a good home, hope this helps
