Dave, I've never had this happen on one of my JD's but have had valve train problems on other engines. here's my mental check list, which I hope will be a guide to you. 1. Camshaft. If one lobe is wiped out, you might get the problems you described. Also, I once had an engine with a cracked block that warped the cam enough to cause it to break. This resulted in too little cam to lifter lift which bent push rods because they were out of time; it's worth checking, but I'd guess that more than 1 out of 4 would have some sort of problem. 2. Lifters or cam followers. A stuck one that didn't go down could make trash out of a push rod by just staying up for a few strokes. 3. Rocker arm - tappet. A maladjusted rocker that forced the valve into the piston could make a push rod shaped the way you've described. Let's hope it hasn't made a big hole into the piston or the valve. In general, check the valve train for the stuff that the cam pushes against or that the valve is pushed against. It's almost certain that your problem lies there. You've got a 2 cylinder engine. 4 valves. 4 pushrods. One problem out of four ain't bad. Gawd forbid that you had a 12 cylinder engine that that was doing this. (assuming that anybody ever made 12's with pushrods instead of ohc setups.) best of luck, Steve
