hey guys:

I recently bought a 1967 4020 diesel and am in the process of cleaning it for paint prep. what is the best thing to use for grease removal besides elbow grease :) I've heard that oven cleaner works, what else? What's the best?

Thanks

John

I use an engine cleaner nozzle with siphon hose on my air compressor, using commercial degreaser from any auto parts store. Tape up or seal any places you do not want water to enter or clean around those areas with a brush and scraper. Spray at about 90 to 100 PSI and it takes all the grease, gunk, mud etc right off. I spray outdoors cause it can be messy but it's real cheap. I then wash it down with water spray and wipe down the tractor with mineral spirits before painting. I prefer to wear a respirator when spraying.

John:

Sorry I couldn't respond until now. I agree with the other guys. If you want to clean it AND remove some paint, the lye gravy works very well, and it's cheap. If you have access to a power washer, it's pretty quick to clean up after. Jerry has an improved method for cooking the stuff which makes for a smoother product.

If you go to search and type in lye gravy, you'll find some pictures I posted over the course of an afternoon when I cleaned and stripped one of my wheel centers.

If you only want to clean it, spray it down with some diesel fuel, which will soften the hard elements of the grease, then powerwash.

After you powerwash it and you're convinced it's cleaned, clean it two more times. 8>)

Glad you liked the article. I'm working on one about the lye gravy. Hopefully it will get published, too.

Go for Frank's lye gravy. Takes grease, paint and all away. Dutch oven kettle full cost me about $6 and did basically the whole tractor. Heat your starch like you would make gravy to eat then let it cool before you put the lye in. The lye will make it hot again. Be sure to keep the mixture moist with either spraying it or wrap in plastic. works great.

I use a hot high pressure washer to get off the worst of it. Then use some good caustic type soap. You may want to try some of F-I-T s lye gravy.and get the paint off too.
