Help with 70 Gas battery cable

I am about to attempt starting a 70 Gas that I purchased last fall. The battery cable was crumbling and disconnected when I got the tractor. My question is this: what size wire (gauge) do I need for a replacement and how long does it need to be? I measured the old worn one at 6.5 feet, but I don't know if this was jimmy-rigged to connect to the starter or if it was the right length. If I run the cable under the foot platform where it should be, is 6.5 foot the right length? My operator and parts manual are no help on this one. Thanks for your help.

On my 1954 model 70 gas, the ground cable is only about 15" long. This is the "braided" cable which attaches to the POSITIVE terminal on one end, and to the tractor chassis on the other. I use one of the bolts in the top of the differential housing to get a good solid ground. When I first got the tractor, there were indications that the grounding cable attached to the battery box, but I discovered that the paint on the new b-box tended to prevent a good ground.

The NEGATIVE cable runs to the starting motor. There are some clips on the main housing which route the cable past the flywheel, and then under the deck plate, into the b-box. 6.5 feet sounds a little on the long side to me, but mine got it's new cables in 1995, so I've forgotten exactly which size I used. For that tractor, I used TSC. Your Deere dealer can sell you one that is exactly the right length, however.

You might try using a piece of small rope or twine to follow the route of the cable and determine with a fair degree of accuracy the length of cable you need.

I would like to do that, but the tractor is in a shed 15 miles away, and I can't drop out to look at it every day. I plan on going out there this weekend and was hoping to have a new cable in hand when I go. Maybe start the old girl on Saturday without having to run all the way back into town to get a cable. Can any of you measure yours in the shed and tell me. I measured the old one with my wife's fabric (flexible) tape. The serial number is 7027531 (I was told that there were two different lengths based on serial number.

Doc:

The parts numbers for battery cables are:

AB4100 R Cable, battery, ground
AF1754 R Cable, battery to starting motor

My PC 313, Parts catalog, model 70 tractor, shows this information on page(s) 35-28 and 35-29. While I can believe that a DIESEL tractor has different cables, the above listed are the ONLY ones shown for the gasoline tractor. The one from Mother Deere will be the exact correct length. If your dealer is telling you there are two, he is including the different cables needed for the Diesel tractor as the other choice.

Good luck!
