My 420 is supposed to be positive ground, but one of the previous owners had hooked it up bass-ackward so that the negative terminal is grounded. I discovered it after I had it a while and started working on it. It seems to start and run OK as it is with the ground backward, but i wonder about switching the ground back to where it should be. Could the ground reversal have fried the generator or regulator? ANd should I switch the ground after checking out the generator and regulator and /or replacing/rebuilding them? Thanks for any help you can give.

Tubba, that tractor will operate good at either ground. ~Is it charging & showing a charge now? If so it would be easier to leave it alone.
~If it isn't charging, or if it is charging & the ammeter is reading backwards, now would be the time to change it back.
~Having the ground hooked up backwards won't hurt anything in the generator, but can be hard on the regulator [if it isn't rated for both positive or negative ground], as long as the generator was polarized for the ground change it will charge without any problems.
~The power wire from the ign switch to the ignition coil, & the wire from the coil to the distributor should be swapped around to match the battery polarity… [IF; battery is hooked negative ground then - side of coil should go to dist,,IF battery is hooked positive ground then + side of coil should go to dist.
~The ammeter should be wired so it shows a + charge when charging & - charge when discharging.
~Whenever changing, or after working on the charging system, the generator should be polarized to the new system polarity… [on the 420, ground the (F) post on the generator then momentarily touch a wire from the BATTERY terminal on the starter to the (A) post [larger of the two] on the generator until you see a spark, that will properly polarize the generator……..

Clooney:
thanks for getting back to me. The ammeter doesnt show a charge, but the guy i bought it from says he didnt think the charging system was working, and i noticed that the generator was missing the band that goes around it near the back, thus leaving a gaping hole open to the weather. I am going to get the generator checked out and fixed if need be, then go thru the charging system per your recommendations (which i printed for future reference) thanks
