3020 Question

Neighbor mentioned a couple of 3020's a jockey picked up for resale. Said he knew they were recently imported, and possibly French? made or made for the French market. I had not heard of this before. He mentioned they used the round JD ignition key rather than the standard flat key. I've not seen the tractors or have any other details yet. I could use another 3020 but the imported part had me wondering if parts interchangability might be a problem. Thanks folks.

Thanks kindly for all the responses. I hope to get a look at these in the next couple days - the serial number data was especially helpful. I had seen it before but didn't remember anything about the special export tractors. My friend drove both these and said they ran out nice, the different ignition key was what caught his eye as well the fact that he knew they had just been imported and the jockey had more than he expected in them due to import/export fees. I'll take a camera along with me when I look at them. If the serial number indicates they are anything special, I'll post the pics.

If the tractors came from Canada & being origionaly made in the US the fee's/taxes should be nil.

etc from canada, turns out they were stolen.A dealer in Canada was selling them.Guess I shouldn't post his name, hear he's still in
business. So far my friend is out $90000.

I don't know if they would be any different. As for the round key they were standard on all the old style 20 series Deeres, the square head key came in with side consols.
So if it has a round key and the remotes and three point are on the dash you are looking at an old style 3020.

Odds are they are Canadian Quebec tractors purchased when the Can dollar was worth $1.10 US in the late 60's early 70's. Now the Canadian peso is worth 65 cents US. Bargain prices for importers from Canada.

I suggest that you check the serial number. While my information is for the 3010, I suspect that there could be 3020 equivilents, and there are some SCARCE export only product codes:

For the 3010:
1st digit = 1 (indicated 30xx series)
2nd digit = model type
---1 = rowcrop ---2 = standard
---3 = high crop (not used w/3010 )
---4 = row crop utility
---5 = industrial
---6 = SPECIAL ROW CROP UTILITY (EXPORT ONLY)
---7 = LANZ SPECIAL STANDARD (EXPORT ONLY)
---8 = orchard
(3rd digit = fuel type only given after 1964)

The possibility of finding a European export tractor SHOULD include the possibility of finding one of those very scarce serial number variations, specifically the 6s or 7s. As I mentioned my info was for the 3010: REAL USEFUL 3020 and 4020 info is VERY hard to acquire!

I do suggest checking those serial number plates!

I don't know if this will help at all, but EPC doesn't show any variations for European 3020s, like it does for a lot of the later models. I guess I didn't know that JD was that big into the European market back then, although I know they did export a lot of tractors. My understanding was that the export tractors at that time were basically the same as the domestic tractors and I'm sure they were built in Waterloo. Just my two cents.
