Unstyled B mag questions

My B has a Wico X mag I believe. It has a coil wire from the bottom part of the cap to the top. Which wire on the cap is number one? How hard is it to replace the oil seal in this mag. Mine drips oil when the engine is running but seems to work ok.

Thanks for the help,
John

You probably just need a new mounting gasket. Oil from the govenor lubricates the trip mechanism on the back of the magneto. If needed I carry a full line of parts for Wico mags.

John, it sounds more like you have a Wico C than an X if it has an external coil wire.
~It really doesn't matter which cap tower is used for # one as the mag spins at engine speed & fires every time the piston comes up [even on the exhaust stroke]
~Most people use the front tower for # one on the C. ~Regardless of which tower you use for # one, the tower that fires when the flywheel lines up with the case mark on compression on the L/H side must be used on the L/H side. [the L/H plug must spark at L/H impulse on the flywheel to case mark on compression on the L/H side]
~To install the mag correctly;. install a paper clip or other bare wire in the forward tower of the mag & bend to be within 1/8 of the mag case, then while looking at the rear of the mag & the mag held in the upright [installed] position, turn the impulse coupling to the left until it snaps & a spark appears at the wire to case, then back the impulse cup up slightly until the drive lugs are running fore/aft [parallel with the floor] Then with the L/H spark plug removed, turn the flywheel in the running direction until compression is felt on the L/H cylinder & the flywheel L/H impulse mark is in line with the case mark [at 3 oclock behind flywheel], (note: the mag drive flange slots on the R/H end of the governor shaft must be running fore/aft parallel with the ground [if not the governor is installed wrong], then install the mag & turn the top of the mag all the way forward, then rotate the flywheel to the right turn & then back in the running direction until the L/H impulse is aligned with the case mark again, then slowly turn the mag top to the rear until the impulse snaps [tighten it down there] then back the flywheel up turn again, then forward until the mag snaps [at this time the L/H impulse to case mark should line up, if not, re-do the timing until it does.

Thanks Clooney. That is pretty much the way we did it but the tractor is agrivating to start. Maybe it just needs to run! We bored the motor .250 and used the pistons from an early styled B. Carb was sent to Treadwell to be rebuilt. The tractor is still partially completed and as no back tires so we can't really run it around to break in the motor. It may get better after we have had a chance to get it driving around.

Does the mag have a seal in it or should there not be enough oil in the governor housing to actually make the mag leak to the inside? I will pull the mag back off and make sure the drain isnt plugged up in the gov housing. It shouldnt be, everything has been apart and cleaned up but dirt-dobbers seem to be able to stop stuff up while u stop to wash your hands!

Thanks for the help

John, the "C" model and the "XH" series Wico mags have a seal in the mag , The seal is to keep the oil from getting into the mag .Does the impulse work OK on your mag?If not you may have to add a extra gasket on the mag to space out to keep the impulse from binding. I have seen them leak and also hard to start. If that happens usually the problem is in the governor housing.Mag side brg worn, snap ring worn, mag drive coupling.Just remember these old tractors have a few miles on them.Let us know what you find. The impluse works fine on the mag. After running the tractor against a load for about 30 min to help break in the motor it starts better now. That is the first time I have got to adjust the carb under load and with the motor hot.

The oil does apear to be inside the mag. It drips out of the drain in the bottom of the mag while the motor is running. Maybe this weekend I will get a chance to pull the mag off and take it apart. I guess it wouldnt hurt to order a seal first, then take it apart!

Thanks
John
