I need to change oil in my tractors. I have a M 420 B 520 and some others what should i use. I also have a 41 b that smokes and many old timers said throw some nondetergent oil in and it will stop the smoking at full throttle. Tell me what you think. Thanks you all are wonderful

Keep using what'cha been using. The only time I'll switch to detergent oil is if I've been into the engine and able to clean it out during a rebuild or some other repair. At that point I'll switch to detergent. Detergent oil will help keep in suspension all that stuff that you normally find in the bottom of the crancase, and will allow a good percentage of it to drain out with the oil, rather than fossilizing in the bottom of the engine.

Well it depends on whats in there now. If theres non-detergent then keep using it if there's regular oil keep using it. If you go from non-detergent to regular then it will cause bits and pieces of junk to fall off of things and it will make you oil a grinding substnce. The smoke at full throttle is normal. When you run pretty much any thing at full throttle then it will smoke. But if it's oil burn then using non-detergent wounldn't work because when it heats up it gets thin then it burn off again.

I dont know about an m, but I have never heard of your theory of tractors smoking at full throttle being nomal except diesels that are pulling hard. I don't hesitate to use my 420 at full throttle, but you can't see anything coming out of the stack plus it uses its fair share of oil to boot.

Why would ANYONE in this day & age use non-detergent oil in anything? If these tractors were run at all during the late 50's & 1960's farmers then were using detergent oil in them. If Your afraid of the horror stories about a blown engine because a "Dirty Engine" was run on detergent oil... then pull the valve cover, pan, etc., clean it up & run detergent oil! Keep in mind Your tractor engine was worn-out BEFORE You ever got hold of it! Otherwise the "Prior Owner" would probably still be using it for something other than taking up shed space.
