My neighbor has a 53(???) B that he uses with a 5' finish mower. As of late it has been down on power. Running the finish mower, when he has to go up a slight slope in his front yard it bogs down and almost stalls. Used to handle this with no problem. He said he is on his second set of plugs for the summer. Thought the oil cup on the air cleaner might be over full. Was going to check that this morning. As a note of comparison, I have a Farmall 140 with a woods L59 that I mow my lawn with. The B is rated 5 hp above my 140 so I figured it should just play with that finish mower. I am mechanically knowledgeable, but not on John Deeres. I asked him about checking the points and he said it didn't have any????? Any idea where to start looking for a power lose????
Thanks.

When my late model B acted like that it was the choker coil spring. There is a little cup on the side of the carb that covers a coil spring that actuates the choke. When the "stops" wear out, the spring jumps past them. Then the choke stays about 1/2 closed, causing it to run like you described. The last year for the late model B's was 1952, some had mags & some had distributors, but all have points, I think the proper setting is .015 in either case. Bad points would cause poor power & poor starting, but it probably wouldn't cause the plug fouing. Hope this helps.

Thanks! I'll check out the points and see what that will do for him. I'll also take a look at the choke to ensure it is functioning properly.
