I need to add a second remote hydrolic system to my 4010. The first remote is the original remote. Do I need to locate a remote like the original, or would a newer aftermarket remote be a better choice?

I added an extra remote to my JD 3010. It was the second remote off of a JD 3020. The pieces that are unique to the second remote are two specially formed metal hydraulic lines (I imagine that you could substitute regular hydraulic hoses), three extra long bolts to bolt the second unit (with valves for the lever...I forget the correct term) to the bottom of the first, an extra long bolt and additional bushing to attach the lever next to the original lever. I believe everything else is the same.

I did have to make some modifications though to add the second set of hydraulics. First I had to drill and tap two new holes in rear of tractor to attach the breakaway couplers (existing holes were opposite to what I needed). Second, I had to carve a slot into the plate where the original hydraulics go through (under the steering column behind the shield holding the light switch, starter switch, etc.).

I used some generic o-rings in between the two valve units...so far there has been no leak (JD uses flat o-rings).

I managed to pick the whole "kit" on auction for 360 USD. The cost if you buy all rebuilt parts (couplers and values most expensive), will cost over 1000 USD.

Finding a junked out 4010/4020 with the second remote would be your best bet (check tractor salvage yards).

I've got an extra remote I would sell. It's one
of those that dealers sell that works off a 12 volt switch, and just plumbs into the back of the
tractor, giving you an extra remote.I used it on
a 4240,it worked good.
